December 1st is World AIDs Day, and the rest of December is AIDs Awareness Month. I've made this little red ribbon for people to add to their DA icons as I have to help raise awareness of this terrible disease. If you need help putting it on your icon, let me know. :3
One of the reasons that I support the fight against AIDs so strongly is because of the appalling stigma attached to this disease that has been so wildly misconstrued. I recall reading in one of my books about a switchboard that was made in London during the 80's for homosexual people that were worried that they may be HIV positive, and thus were allowed to call in with symptoms, how to get help, etc, and the switchboard got such a massive influx of phone calls that it broke down. When technicians and engineers were called to fix it, they refused because they 'didn't want to catch the disease from the wiring'.
For one, AIDs is not a disease that is spread through touching. The HIV virus is spread through bodily fluids, and does not always lead to AIDs.
Another thing that bothers me a lot is the judgment and contempt that AIDs victims have to suffer on top of their disease. Not only are they treated like lepers, but they are also the subject of accusations such as being a drug user, a homosexual or a 'whore'. People obviously tend to forget that AIDs has been spread to unwilling children via breast feeding. Children who need blood transfusions and happen to be unlucky with their donor. People who have been raped. I am not condoning unsafe sex - on the contrary, I would hope that many people have learned by now that it can open the doorways to many diseases. Don't do it, children. That's what this is all about.
I remember the sick feeling I had in my stomach after watching Philadelphia. I went to the internet and did some research and learned some pretty horrible things.
And you know what else makes me sick? The fact that it is a 'funny disease'. Anyone making jokes about leukemia or breast cancer is immediately branded as The Most Horrible Fucked Up Person On The Planet. But if someone makes a joke about AIDs - well that's ok, because that one is funny. Just because it's a preventable disease doesn't mean we have to shun anyone with it. It's like laughing at a person with lung cancer because they smoked cigarettes. I know people don't generally mean it when they make jokes about it, but I'm just not sure how people can make light of such a horrible disease that has destroyed so many lives.
By putting this red ribbon on your icon, you can help generate support for the AIDs Awareness Month.
I think I'll replace the maracas in my icon with that. (Have you seen that cool new shirt on QOL.com where some of the proceeds go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust? The yellow one with Freddie on it. I'm definitely getting that one.)
I love you even moar now. <3 Better comment tomorrow. But ye best believe I'm adding this.
But before I go: ZOMFG PHILADELPHIA. No other movie can make me go QUITE that far in emotion-range, from delirious happy-d'aww-giggling (the costume party scene) to "OMFG AAHH SO BEAUTIFUL SO BEAUTIFUL I THINK MY HEART IS GOING TO EXPLODE FROM THE POWERFUL BEAUTY OMFFFGGG" (the opera scene) to "BAAAWWW LIFE IS AWFUL PEOPLE ALL JUST SUCK, I WILL NEVER BE HAPPY AGAIN." (... you know the damn scene. D: Fact. Fact. FACT.)
Ye know what, screw tomorrow. I'm up. I'm adding this right damn now.
(Also. :3 I saw's Let The Cosmos Rock in theatres last night. It made up for the past horrible few weeks. <3 It really did. There's another thing that jerks me around emotionally just horribly and I LOVE IT. xD)

... And while you're at it, keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul.

Omg THE OPERA SCENE, my soul died in that part. Tom Hanks is the FUCKING LORD of EVERYTHING GOOD. Seriously that part was so amazing and deep. Another part that made me like BAWWW was when he goes to Denzel Washington's office and Denzel keeps like maintaining his distance from him and not touching him and things... And Antonio Banderas? HELL YES. Definitely my second choice if I was a gay man. <3 (You know my first ;D)
ARE YOU dead? Because I would be. You're. So. Lucky. D: You saw them in all their glory on the big screen. Aaah! Maximum Brian hair and Roger eyes! I bet it was amazing, and you deserve a good time 8D Were many other people there?
Yer so welcome, dear! I'm really really happy ye made it. <3 It's just lovely. And I shall be pimping it in my journal soon!
;_; Oh my goodness. That opera scene... that's what won him the Oscar. I'm convinced. It's just. One of my very favorite scenes in cinema history, PERIOD. It might be my favorite. It's just... so powerful and gorgeous and just absolutely transcendent. That scene is heaven right there, just so unspeakably beautiful - "I am the God who comes down to make of the earth a Heaven. Heaven - is in your eyes! I am love!"
;__; AAAAHHHHH. My soul didn't DIE there, it like, exploded out of my heart and got enormous wings and flew up to the moon and took Hanks/Andy with me and we like, did the tango. On the moon. And took Antonio/Miguel with us, and he had a rose in his mouth. Made of love. But AGHGHH yes, yes, he's so adorable! Miguel, mah belle! <3 ... <-- Had to be done. xD I just love in the slow dance at the party how he takes off the hat and just SNUGGLES into Andy's neck, all cozy and safe and AAAWW. And then in the hospital. ;_; When he kisses every one of his fingers - AAAHH! And after he closes the door does that little hand-dance, like "yay, we are alone at last!"
I do love Denzel in that movie too. I just love how he slowly comes around from being homophobic and awful (but still, weirdly, a very good and decent human being - he had to be, otherwise he never would have changed) to just. Awesome. (Also - AHH in the opera scene he was crying too! If ye look, ye can see a tear in his mustache. <3)
It's... really weird. That movie just DESTROYS me emotionally, but I love it. So much. And even weirder, I find it really comforting. DO NOT know why. DO NOT. But it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it is my favorite drama. Thanks for talking with me about it. :3 I don't know many other people who have seen it.
